Exporting World-class Services
National and worldwide acknowledgement of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center's pioneering clinical accomplishments has led to ventures that extend beyond western Pennsylvania.
One example is UPMC's cancer treatment planning services, which are now offered in more than 70 locations nationwide, including UPMC Whitfield in Ireland.
Another is the Istituto Mediterraneo per i Trapianti e Terapie (ISMETT). A partnership since 1997 between UPMC and region of Sicily, ISMETT offers lifesaving transplants and other previously unavailable specialized medical procedure to the people of southern Italy. In addition, it is becoming a major referral center for other Mediterranean and Middle East countries, such as Saudi Arabia, with which the center has already established a telemedicine consulting service.
