  • A-Life Hospital
    A-Life Hospital’s ICODE product delivers Computer Assisted Coding automation through Natural Language Processing (NLP) technology that reads and understands medical text. A-Life Hospital is a partnership of A-Life Medical, a leader in computer-assisted coding solutions (founded in 1996 in San Diego, California), and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
  • Alliance Oncology
    Alliance Oncology collaborates with hospitals to provide affordable, technologically-advanced, full-service radiation oncology centers. A joint venture with Alliance Imaging, a leader in diagnostic imaging, Alliance Oncology now has three centers completed or under construction in California and Massachusetts, and three more under development.
  • Askesis
    Askesis provides clinical workflow software to community-based behavioral health centers, helping them improve care, speed claims processing, and increase revenue. A new version developed in collaboration with UPMC’s Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic includes support for clinical decision making. Askesis software is used by 74 behavioral health organizations in 24 states.
  • BioTronics
    Developed to provide medical equipment management and maintenance to UPMC’s internal equipment, BioTronics began selling services externally in 1984. The company supports more than $700 million in equipment, including imaging and heart-lung machines, surgical instruments, and operating room monitors. In 2005, Biotronics was ranked among Pittsburgh’s top five biotech companies.
  • CombineMed
    CombineMed provides technology that lowers costs and fosters innovation in the health care supply chain. During fiscal year 2006, UPMC and two other medical centers committed to purchase $400 million in medical-surgical supplies and pharmaceuticals as part of CombineMed’s first electronic sourcing event, and expect to realize substantial savings over the contract terms.
  • D3 Advanced Radiation Planning Services
    Developed by UPMC, D3 provides hardware, software, and planning services for intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), a sophisticated cancer treatment that precisely targets cancerous tissue while sparing healthy tissue. D3 makes it possible for small or remote hospitals to provide IMRT to their patients because the requirements for new equipment and personnel are minimal. The company provides IMRT services at 50 sites nationwide, including 12 in Pittsburgh, and continues to grow rapidly.
  • EBenefits
    EBenefits provides employee benefits management software similar to a system adopted at UPMC. EBenefits software has been purchased by hospitals and academic institutions which seek to improve service to employees and productivity for human resource departments. In 2006, EBenefits’ first customer successfully completed its implementation.
  • ImPACT
    Developed by the director of the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program, ImPACT software allows rapid, accurate assessment of an athlete’s concussion injuries, and determines recovery by comparing results to archived, pre-injury measurements. Employed by both amateur and professional sports teams, ImPACT is the most widely used concussion assessment software in the world.
  • Incline
    Incline is a Web-based software program that allows staff to use one program to record payments of various types, such as for patient services, parking, or donations. The software is secure and integrated, so all payments made through Incline are automatically posted to the correct account and can be easily tracked from multiple locations. Incline eliminates the need for credit card terminals, printers, and associated electrical and phone expenses. Incline was developed by UPMC Diversified Services information technology and UPMC Treasury staffs with a team from UPMC Physician Services.
  • Revivicor
    One of several ongoing efforts within UPMC to advance the accessibility and clinical success of transplantation, Revivicor is an early-stage biotechnology company developing engineered tissues and whole organs for human transplantation.
  • SimMedical
    SimMedical develops and sells advanced medical training simulation solutions designed to improve caregiver preparedness, enhance medical outcomes, and reduce health care delivery costs. SimMedical is the commercial outgrowth of over a decade of UPMC’s experience in using medical simulation as an effective training tool for its physicians and staff.
  • Stentor
    Provides transmission, viewing, and archiving of high-quality, filmless x-ray and other diagnostic images on a hospital's existing computer intranet and hardware, without the need for expensive fiber-optic cabling. Founded in 1998 with technology developed in the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine's radiology informatics department, Stentor now serves over 200 customer sites. In November 2004, Stentor was ranked the No. 1 picture archive and communication system vendor by KLAS Enterprises, the health care information technology monitoring firm.
  • TheraDoc
    TheraDoc develops and implements systems to enhance patient safety and quality care. In June 2006, UPMC announced an investment in the company, which provides its services to 114 health care facilities in 23 states. UPMC also will contribute its medical expertise to the development of new TheraDoc capabilities, thereby enhancing patient care at hospitals across the country.
