UPMC Makes Prestigious Best Hospitals Honor Roll

Once again, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center has received national recognition for its clinical programs. UPMC earned the 13th position out of over 5,400 eligible hospitals in the U.S.News & World Report magazine’s annual “America’s Best Hospitals” ranking. The 2007 results place UPMC one notch higher than last year and mark its eighth appearance on the prestigious Honor Roll.
.
To be placed on the magazine's Honor Roll, hospitals not only had to rank in certain specialty areas but they also had to be close to the top in a number of them. Also included on this select list of nationally-renowned institutions are Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore; the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.; and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

In addition, UPMC is nationally ranked in 14 of the 16 medical specialties surveyed and is the only local hospital to receive recognition in any category. UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside placed in 13 specialty areas and Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC was ranked in gynecology.

U.S.News & World Report 's America's Best Hospitals is an assessment of the nation's hospitals based largely on an index made up of three equal parts related to quality of care: reputation, mortality, and various factors such as procedure volume and nursing care. These rankings appeared in U.S.News & World Report magazine's online Best Hospitals Guide for 2007.
