Excellence in Patient Care
To serve our patients, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center is creating the health system of the future — a system where every patient receives the right care, in the right way, at the right time. Innovative clinical programs and state-of-the-art facilities are the foundation of this health system model. In 2005, UPMC invested $147 million in facility enhancements and new clinical technology. The results are visible throughout western Pennsylvania — progress toward a major Children's Hospital and Research Center, new emergency departments, retirement facilities, community-based cancer centers, and more.
UPMC advances patient care through many different systemwide initiatives, including:
The Center for Quality Improvement and Innovation oversees many initiatives enhancing patient-centered care, such as:
-
Condition C program
With a single telephone call, physicians and staff members on a growing number of UPMC hospital campuses can initiate a Condition C (crisis intervention) and summon a mobile medical emergency team to the scene of a patient crisis within 90 seconds.
-
Condition H program
Condition H (Help) is a unique inpatient rapid response program designed to attend immediately to patients and families. If a patient or their family believe that their health is in serious jeopardy, they can contact hospital operators in order to receive medical assistance twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.
-
Transforming Care at the Bedside
UPMC chosen to participate in a pilot program to move health care operations into a more patient-focused environment. This program is part of an initiative with the Institute for Health Care Improvement and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
