UPMC Hires Nursing Expert to Support International Growth

PITTSBURGH, January 3, 2008 — To support growing demand for its clinical services from around the world, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) has hired Carole Miserendino, Dr.P.H., M.S.N., R.N., as vice president for interval nursing operations. Her primary responsibilities in this new role are to provide international clinical operations analysis and to serve as interim chief nursing officer as needed during the development of patient-care services overseas.

As part of UPMC’s Chief Nursing Officers Leadership Team, Dr. Miserendino will provide improvement expertise, operations analysis and interim executive support domestically as well as in UPMC’s international operations, which now comprise a transplant hospital in Italy, cancer centers in Ireland and emergency services in Qatar.

Formerly a senior manager at Deloitte Consulting, Dr. Miserendino brings a diverse background to UPMC. At Deloitte, she focused on patient safety and quality, electronic health records and improvements in hospital operations. In addition to previous consulting work at Huron Consulting Group and CAM & Associates, she served as chief nursing officer and associate dean for clinical practice at the University of Illinois at Chicago Medical Center.

“We are delighted to have such a high-caliber professional join our nursing and international teams,” said Charles Bogosta, executive vice president at UPMC. “Dr. Miserendino will be instrumental in responding to numerous opportunities that are arising around the globe for UPMC. Clinical excellence and hands-on expertise set us apart from other providers in the international arena, and Carole will help us to maintain that advantage.”

Dr. Miserendino earned her Doctor of Public Health in health policy and administration from the University of Illinois at Chicago, a Master of Science in maternal child nursing from Loyola University in Chicago and a Bachelor of Arts in nursing from Augustana College. She has won several nursing awards, and has made presentations nationally and internationally on nursing and clinical topics. As an appraiser for the Magnet Recognition Program, she assesses hospitals across the nation for excellence in nursing and patient care.
