Charles J Burke, III, M.D.


Charles J. (Chip) Burke, III, M.D., assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, is the team physician for the Pittsburgh Penguins and is the past president of the National Hockey League (NHL) Team Physicians Society.

Dr. Burke developed and directs the NHL Concussion Program. He serves on the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Sports Medicine Concussion Program staff and on the NHL’s Injury Analysis Panel, which studies playing conditions with regard to injury occurrence and injury prevention. The panel makes recommendations to the league involving conditions of the ice and rink facilities, players’ protective equipment and game rules.

Dr. Burke was the team physician for the 2002 United States Men’s Olympic Ice Hockey Team and the U.S. hockey team in the 1991 Canada Cup. Born and raised in Boston, Dr. Burke was a cum laude graduate of Harvard University, where he earned a varsity letter for hockey. Today, he is actively involved in USA Hockey, coaching several teams in the North Hills Amateur Hockey Association and serving on the Safety and Protective Equipment Committee and the Coaching Education Program.

Dr. Burke earned his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in 1981, then completed a two-year general surgery residency at the University of Massachusetts. In 1986, he completed his training in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. A former assistant professor of orthopaedics at the Medical College of Pennsylvania, Dr. Burke had also directed Allegheny General Hospital’s orthopaedic trauma service.

Dr. Burke shares a medical practice with James P. Bradley, M.D., who is a team orthopaedic surgeon for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Burke and Bradley Orthopaedics is based at UPMC St. Margaret in Aspinwall.

Dr. Burke resides in Fox Chapel.
