Oscar C Marroquin, M.D.


UPMC cardiologist Oscar C. Marroquin, M.D., is director of the Center for Interventional Cardiology Research at UPMC and assistant professor of medicineat the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He also is director of Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC’s Magee Heart Center, associate director of UPMC’s Ladies Hospital Aid Society (LHAS) Women’s Heart Center and director of the cardiac catheterization laboratory at UPMC Passavant.

A knowledgeable source for issues related to interventional and preventative cardiology and heart disease in women, Dr. Marroquin also has a background in the use of intravascular ultrasound and the assessment of the coronary microvasculature.

Dr. Marroquin’s research has been rewarded in the form of grants and numerous publications. Recently, Dr. Marroquin was the principal investigator of a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in January 2008, which found that drug-coated stents are just as safe and more efficacious than bare metal stents when used for off-label indications.

A member of the American Medical Association, the American College of Physicians and the American College of Cardiology, Dr. Marroquin co-authored more than 10 published papers and nearly 20 abstracts. He received the Outstanding Teacher Award in 2004 from the University of Pittsburgh Cardiovascular Fellows and was honored with the University of Pittsburgh’s Dr. Galal M. Ziady Memorial Award for Outstanding Achievements in the Care of the Cardiac Patient in 2003.

Dr. Marroquin received his graduate and undergraduate degrees at the Universidad Francisco Marroquin in Guatemala. He went on to do his internship and residency at the Presbyterian Medical Center of the University of Pennsylvania and completed his post-doctoral and interventional cardiology fellowships at UPMC. Dr. Marroquin also received a certificate in clinical research from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute-sponsored clinical research training program at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
