Trevor Orchard, M.D.


Trevor Orchard, M.D., professor of epidemiology, medicine and pediatrics at the Graduate School of Public Health, University of Pittsburgh ; and medical director of the nutrition lipid program - a clinic to which doctors refer patients with lipid metabolism disorders.

Among his many research activities, Dr. Orchard is principal investigator of the Epidemiology of Diabetic Complications, a study that since 1985 has been striving to understand the factors that lead to the complications of type 1 diabetes and how to avoid these complications. The study has been renewed by the NIH for a third time and is now in Phase II, which continues until 2003. Dr. Orchard also has interests in type 2 diabetes and the role of diabetes and insulin resistance in heart disease generally.

Dr. Orchard has published more than 150 scientific papers, served on various NIH review committees and research committees of the American Heart Association and American Diabetes Association (from whom he also received the Kelly West Award). He is a past associate editor of the ADA journal Diabetes Care.
