Fred H. Rubin, M.D., is chair of the Department of Medicine at UPMC Shadyside, vice chair of medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
Dr. Rubin received his undergraduate degree from Harvard University in 1971 and his medical degree from Pennsylvania State University in 1975. Dr. Rubin's internship and residency in internal medicine at Royal Victoria Hospital, McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, were followed by a fellowship in general medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
His areas of special interest include innovative teaching methods in geriatric medicine, management of delirium in the elderly, and modifying the hospital environment to meet the needs of the elderly.
Dr. Rubin recently began the Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP), an innovative approach to preventing older patients from declining physically and mentally while hospitalized at UPMC Shadyside. The goals of the HELP program are to maintain physical and cognitive functioning of high risk older adults throughout their hospitalization, maximize their independence at discharge, assist with the transition from hospital to home and prevent unplanned hospital re-admissions.
