Jacques E Chelly, M.D., Ph.D.

Jacques E. Chelly, M.D., Ph.D., is professor and vice chairman of clinical research for the department of anesthesiology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and holds a secondary appointment in the department of orthopedic surgery and is director of orthoepdic anesthesia and acute postoperative interventional pain service at UPMC Shadyside Hospital.

Dr. Chelly is one of the foremost authorities in acute pain management, especially in orthopaedics. He is president of the newly-formed Orthopedic Anesthesia, Pain and Rehabilitation Society and a leader in the use of nerve blocks in orthopaedic surgery, a procedure that allows a decrease in the use of morphine and other narcotic drugs which are often not well-tolerated by patients. These techniques also provide better post-operative pain control, allowing patients to recover function of their arms or legs faster.

A prolific author on the topics of orthopaedic anesthesia and acute pain management, Dr. Chelly has been the lead author and co-author on nearly 200 scientific articles and has given more than 100 presentations to national and international conferences and meetings.

He is the editor and co-editor of two medical books on nerve block techniques: Peripheral Nerve Block Technique: A Color Atlas, second edition, published by Lippincott, Williams and Wilkins in 2003, and Continuous Peripheral Nerve Block Techniques: An Illustrated Guide, published by Mosby in 2001.

Dr. Chelly came to Pittsburgh in 2002 after a distinguished career at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston where he held several positions, including professor of anesthesiology, director of clinical research in the department of anesthesiology, director of orthopaedic anesthesia and acute orthopaedic pain services and director of the International Center for Regional Anesthesia Research. He also has been on the faculty at Baylor University, Necker-Enfants Malades Medical School and Broussais-Hôtel-Dieu Medical School in Paris.

Dr. Chelly has received numerous awards and honors, including being named an expert in cardiovascular pharmacology and toxicology for the French Ministry of Health in 1985; the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Palmes Académiques in 1993; Outstanding Research Facilitator Award from the department of anesthesiology at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston in 1996 and the Excellence in Surgical Pain Management Award in 2000. He received the Dean’s Teaching Award of Excellence at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston in the department of anesthesiology four years in a row.

Dr. Chelly has held staff appointments in anesthesiology at Broussais Hospital in Paris and Hermann Hospital in Houston where he was director of the department of clinical research and director of orthopaedic anesthesia and the orthopaedic acute pain service. He currently is an attending physician at UPMC Shadyside, UPMC Presbyterian, UPMC South Side and Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC.

He has served as a reviewer for several academic journals, including the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, American Journal of Physiology, Journal of Cardiovascular Pharmacology, Anesthesiology, Journal of Hyperthermia, Circulation, Journal of Clinical Anesthesia and Anesthesia and Analgesia. He is a past member of the editorial board of the Journal of Cardiovascular Pharmacology.

He received his medical degree from Necker-Enfants Malades Medical School in Paris and did his anesthesiology and intensive care residency at Broussais Hospital in Paris. Dr. Chelly also holds a doctorate in pharmacology and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Houston. He received a master’s degree in pharmacology from Lariboisiére-St. Louis Medical School in Paris and his undergraduate degree from Mont-Rouge College, also in Paris.
