Erin A Sullivan, M.D.


Dr. Erin A. Sullivan is associate professor of anesthesiology in the department of anesthesiology at the University of Pittsburgh and associate chief of anesthesiology and director of cardiothoracic anesthesiology at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital .

In Oct. 2004, Dr. Sullivan was elected vice president of the Pennsylvania Society of Anesthesiologists and appointed as the legislative chairman of the Pennsylvania Society of Anesthesiologists.

Dr. Sullivan’s primary clinical subspecialty interest is adult and pediatric cardiothoracic anesthesiology including the perioperative anesthetic and pain management of patients presenting for coronary artery bypass grafting, valvular replacement/repair, placement of ventricular assist devices, minimally invasive cardiac procedures, major vascular reconstruction/repair, adult and pediatric congenital cardiac surgery, major non-cardiac intrathoracic surgery, and cardiac and pulmonary transplantation.

Dr. Sullivan’s research interests include regional anesthetic techniques and pain management in patients for cardiothoracic surgery, management and treatment of cardiac failure, inhalation therapy for the treatment of cardiac failure and the utilization of artificial blood substitutes to minimize allogenic blood transfusion in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. She has been a primary investigator for several industry- sponsored clinical trials and she serves as a member of the University of Pittsburgh Institutional Review Board. Dr. Sullivan was recently appointed as a member faculty for the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine. She is the author of several book chapters for major textbooks of cardiothoracic anesthesiology, peer reviewed journal articles and numerous abstracts.

Dr. Sullivan is an active participant in the education of medical students, anesthesiology residents, fellows and faculty. She serves as the chair of the anesthesiology residency program curriculum committee and the director of the cardiothoracic fellowship program. Dr. Sullivan has achieved national recognition within her specialty through her appointment to several committees of professional societies, most notably the education committee of the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists, the committee for faculty development of the Society for Education in Anesthesia, as well as the member of the committee on surgical anesthesia for the American Society of Anesthesiologists.

Dr. Sullivan also serves her specialty at the local, state and national level. She is a member of the board of directors of the Pennsylvania Society of Anesthesiologists. She serves as an alternate delegate from Pennsylvania to the American Society of Anesthesiologists House of Delegates. Dr. Sullivan served as the president of the Western Pennsylvania Society of Anesthesiologists in 2001-2002.

She has been on the University of Pittsburgh faculty since 1998, following seven years at UCLA Medical Center and two at the University of Texas Medical Center.

Dr. Sullivan received her medical degree from the Louisiana State University School of Medicine and did her internship in internal medicine and residency in anesthesiology at the University of Texas Health Center in Houston, where she was also chief resident and was a fellow.
