Dr. Brack G. Hattler is currently a professor of surgery and executive director of the Artificial Lung Laboratory at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Hattler holds a B.A. in French and a Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from Duke University, and received his M.D. from Cornell University Medical School. He joined the university faculty in 1989 as a member of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery and is presently the head of the High Risk Cardiac Surgery Program.
Prior to coming to the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Hattler assumed the position of Chief of Army Organ Transplant Service (Lt. Col.) Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, D.C., tenured as an Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Arizona and established his own private practice for Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery at Porter Memorial Hospital in Denver, CO. Clinically, he retains a major commitment to adult heart surgery and adult heart and lung transplantation. However, Dr. Hattler also remains actively involved in research and has been featured in several publications due to his efforts surrounding the advancement of artificial lung devices.
Dr. Hattler also developed and patented an Intravenous Membrane Oxygenator (IMO) before arriving at the university. This device, which he brought with him to the university, was originally conceived and patented because of the significant need for new forms of therapy in the treatment of reversible lung injury. Presently, Dr. Hattler and his research personnel are focusing their efforts on the development of the Hattler Respiratory Support Catheter, emphasizing various means for improving gas exchange in artificial lung devices.
