Department of Radiology

Women’s Imaging

The women’s imaging division, the largest subspecialty division within the department, has two sections: breast imaging and diagnostic imaging, both based at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC. Magee has nationally recognized clinical programs in breast and gynecological cancers and was one of the original recipients of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ award as a ‘National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health.’ The hospital’s prestigious reputation draws patients from all over the region.

The breast imaging section performs a variety of procedures, including digital mammography (including computer-aided detection), sonography, image-guided breast biopsy, needle localization, ductography, and breast MR. A national leader in breast imaging, Magee was the first hospital in the nation to install a digital mammography system in 2000 and one of the first to perform MRI-guided, vacuum–assisted biopsies in 2005. The diagnostic imaging section provides a complete range of diagnostic and interventional procedures related to gynecologic oncology, infertility, and pregnancy-related complications.

While the division is housed at Magee, service also is provided at UPMC Shadyside/UPMC Hillman Cancer Center and at Magee Womancare centers throughout the Pittsburgh region.
