Heart, Lung, and Esophageal Surgery Institute

Experts at the Heart, Lung, and Esophageal Surgery Institute (HLESI) at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center are dedicated to caring for patients with diseases and disorders of the heart, lungs, and esophagus by using the latest diagnostic, surgical, and medical techniques available. HLESI surgeons are at the forefront of developing new minimally invasive surgical techniques and they share their expertise with surgeons from across the nation and around the world through special training conferences, which utilize UPMC’s state-of-the-art laparoscopic operating rooms.

As a national leader, UPMC was one of the first medical centers in the country to perform minimally invasive surgery for esophageal and lung cancers. In addition, UPMC continues to pioneer the field of artificial heart implantation and the development and use of artificial heart-assist devices. This expertise, coupled with the comprehensive range of diagnostic and treatment modalities offered, makes UPMC uniquely positioned to lead the way in treating diseases like congestive heart failure, esophageal cancer, and lung diseases.

With more than 25 cardiothoracic surgeons and more than 120 staff members, HLESI comprises two divisions: the Division of Thoracic and Foregut Surgery and the Division of Cardiac Surgery.
