Trauma and General Surgery

The Division of General and Trauma Surgery at UPMC offers world-class comprehensive trauma care as well as general surgery procedures by a team of experts and specialists who work together in the study, development, and implementation of new procedures and devices. In recent years, our clinical services have shown a dramatic increase in activity, volume, and complexity, and our facilities have become premier centers for treatment and research in the surgical field. The Division of General Surgery continues to develop its mission of clinical services, research, and teaching under the leadership of Dr. Andrew B. Peitzman, who was appointed chief of the division in 1997 and who is also the executive vice-chairman for the Department of Surgery.

The Trauma Program at UPMC recently celebrated its 20th anniversary of providing state-of-the-art emergency care to patients in the emergency room setting. Our faculty members continue to be immediately available to treat trauma patients in UPMC Presbyterian. In addition, we offer services that include evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and surgical intervention for a variety of disease processes. To better meet the needs of our patients, we have begun to offer our surgical services in many locations in the community.

Our University-affiliated surgeons provide services at the following hospital locations:

  • UPMC Braddock
  • UPMC McKeesport
  • UPMC Passavant
  • UPMC St. Margaret

The division also encompasses the Minimally Invasive Bariatric and General Surgery Program at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC, which continues to treat high volumes of bariatric surgery patients and offers gastric bypass and laparoscopic banding using minimally invasive techniques.
