Carvedilol

(Generic Name) Other Names: Coreg®

Dosage form

Oral tablets: 3.125 mg, 6.25 mg, 12.5 mg, 25 mg

About this drug

Carvedilol (CAR-vey-dil-ol) is used to treat high blood pressure, fast heart rate, heart failure, and chest pain (angina). This medicine is a beta blocker. It reduces the work load of the heart and helps the heart beat more regularly.

Side effects

Common side effects are:

  • dizziness or lightheadedness
  • slow heart beat
  • decreased blood pressure
  • trouble sleeping
  • confusion
  • nausea
  • diarrhea
  • weakness and fatigue. Be careful while taking this drug. Driving and using machines can be dangerous if you are not alert.

Rare side effects include:

  • shortness of breath
  • worsening of heart failure
  • cold hands and feet
  • swelling of ankles, feet, and lower legs

If any of these side effects become severe or bother you, call your doctor. Do not take over-the- counter medicine for your symptoms.

Drug interactions

Tell your doctor or pharmacist about any prescription medicine, over-the-counter medicine, or herbal products that you are taking. He or she will check for interactions.

If you miss a dose

If you miss a medicine dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Take your next dose at its scheduled time, and continue your usual dosing schedule. Do not “double up” on doses to catch up.

Don’t stop taking this medicine

Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor tells you to.

How to take this medicine

Take this medicine at the same time each day, unless your doctor tells you otherwise. You should take this medicine with some water and food. Be sure to follow the fluid restrictions your doctor gave you.
