Oral tablets:
Lopressor: 50 mg, 100 mg
Toprol XL: 25 mg, 50 mg, 100 mg, 200 mg
About this drug
Metoprolol (me-TOE-pro-lol) usually is used to treat high blood pressure, fast heart rate, heart failure, or chest pain (angina). It is a beta blocker. It reduces the work load of the heart and helps the heart beat more regularly.
Side effects
Common side effects are:
- dizziness or light-headedness
- weakness
- slow heart beat
- decreased blood pressure
- trouble sleeping
- confusion
- nausea
- diarrhea
- fatigue. Be careful while taking this drug. Driving and using machines can be dangerous if you’re not alert.
Rare side effects include:
- shortness of breath
- worsening of heart failure
- cold hands and feet
- depression
- swelling of ankles, feet, and lower legs
If any of these side effects becomes severe or bothers you, call your doctor. Do not take over-the-counter medicine for your symptoms.
Drug interactions
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about any prescription medicine, over-the-counter medicine, or herbal products that you are taking. He or she will check for interactions.
If you miss a dose
If you miss a medicine dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Take your next dose at its scheduled time, and continue your usual dosing schedule.
Do not “double up” on doses to catch up.

Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor tells you to.
How to take this medicine
Take this medicine with fluids at the same time every day, unless your doctor tells you otherwise. This medicine usually is taken twice a day. The doses should be spaced 12 hours apart. You may take it with or without food.
