Clear Liquid Diet

  • Clear liquid diets are frequently used before or after a test, procedure, or surgery.
  • Patients with severe nausea or vomiting may also be on this diet.
  • This diet keeps your digestive system almost empty to prevent vomiting.
  • High-protein, high-calorie clear liquid supplements may be ordered by your dietitian or physician.

Foods allowed on a clear liquid diet

Beverages

  • clear tea or coffee (no cream or milk)
  • cranapple, apple, grape, or cranberry juice
  • fruit-flavored drinks
  • carbonated beverages
  • commercial high-protein, high-calorie
  • supplements

Desserts

  • plain gelatin
  • water ices
  • popsicles

Soups

  • fat-free bouillon (chicken or beef)
  • fat free broth

Miscellaneous

  • salt
  • sugar, syrup, jelly, honey
  • plain hard sugar candy in small amounts

No other foods are allowed on this diet.
