Dressing: Pullover-Shirt Single-Arm Method

After an illness, surgery, or injury, some people may have a limited range of motion in their upper body. If motion is limited, simple actions — like getting dressed — may seem difficult.

Helpful tips

Following are a few tips that may help when putting on a pullover shirt:

1. Put your shirt on your lap, with the neck or collar at your knees. Place the back of your shirt on top and facing up. 2. Lean forward. Reach your weaker (affected) arm through the sleeve. Use your stronger (unaffected) arm to pull the sleeve up past your elbow.
3. Slip the shirt over your head. Then reach your stronger arm up under the shirt. Put this arm through the other sleeve. 4. Using your stronger arm, push your shirt over your shoulders. Adjust your shirt by pulling down on the front and sides.
