Pharmacy Residency Program
UPMC Mercy is a 535-bed tertiary care teaching hospital and Level I Regional Resource Trauma Center. The hospital provides comprehensive medical and surgical services, including innovative programs in neurosciences and cardiovascular diseases. UPMC Mercy has accredited residency programs in internal medicine, surgery, family practice, anesthesiology, and physical medicine and rehabilitation in addition to the PGY 1 pharmacy residency.
The PGY 1 pharmacy residency is an ASHP-accredited full-time, one-year program. It provides extensive experience and opportunities in all aspects of health-system pharmacy with major emphasis on clinical pharmacy practice and the application of informatics. Residents gain experience providing a wide range of pharmacotherapy and educational services to health care providers within the hospital. The resident also has the opportunity to participate in academic level instruction through the Duquesne University School of Pharmacy.
The core rotations offered in the residency reflect the strengths of the institution and the pharmacy department, and include:
- cardiology
- critical care
- infectious diseases
- internal medicine/medication safety
- nutritional support
Practice management, drug information, and participation in the pharmacy warfarin management team are conducted in a longitudinal manner. Elective rotations include academics, endocrinology, hematology/oncology, neonatology and nephrology.
As part of the University of Pittsburgh Residency Program, the residents at UPMC Mercy have the opportunity to participate in resident group seminars and journal clubs with pharmacy residents in other training programs at the University of Pittsburgh.
Our PGY 1 program is designed to equip residents with the knowledge, skills and confidence to be excellent practitioners in hospital and academic settings. Upon completion, our residents are prepared to aggressively compete for clinical practice as well as entry level faculty positions.

Application Process
To qualify as a resident candidate, the applicant must be a graduate of an ACPE-accredited Doctor of Pharmacy program and be eligible for licensure in the state of Pennsylvania. Desired characteristics include strong written and verbal communication skills along with the ability to work collaboratively. Application to the program requires submission of:
