Overview
The UPMC Podiatry Residency Program, affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, is a three-year program offering residents access to some of the country’s top medical institutions. In 2011, our program received highest praise and in 2009 achieved 1st place in the Centralized Residency Interview Program’s (CRIP’s) Outstanding Interviews.
Podiatric Medicine and Surgery–36
Residents spend three years in a comprehensive training program with the goal of producing a well-rounded physician and surgeon. Residents rotate through all aspects of medicine and receive the most up-to-date surgical training. Upon completion of the Podiatric Medicine and Surgery–36 (PM&S–36) program, residents will have a broad base of medical knowledge and be comfortable and competent in the medical and surgical treatment of all foot and ankle disorders.
Training & Related Experiences
Residents will train at:
UPMC Podiatry residents will also be provided with laboratory experiences at the UPMC Mercy South Side Outpatient Center Wet Lab, a hands-on facility devoted to the advancement of surgical skills of residents and students. The lab area has multiple work stations equipped for use with cadaveric specimens and anatomical models. Residents are introduced to the latest surgical techniques by program attendings, guest lecturers, and sales representatives. The lab includes standard operating equipment, internal hardware, external fixation, and arthroscopy sets.
Our program is only one of a handful in the nation to offer wet lab experiences for podiatry residents.
Resident Requirements
Residents must obtain ACLS and CPR certifications, as well as state licensure. Residents also must complete a research proposal and participate in Grand Rounds and Journal Club.

- 1st Year - $47,673.80
- 2nd Year - $48,943.20
- 3rd Year - $49,899.20
Externship
The UPMC Podiatry Residency Program accepts third- and fourth-year podiatry students for a one-month clerkship. Interested students must submit the American Association of Colleges of Podiatric Medicine (AACPM) Uniform Podiatric Clerkship Application along with the following information:

- two letters of recommendation
- podiatry school transcripts
- photograph
- A car is required for travel between work locations.
