UPMC Mercy Wound Center

Providing State-of-the-art Wound Care

Almost everyone has had a painful cut, scrape, or burn. Most wounds heal quickly and easily. Some wounds, however, can take months to heal. Untreated wounds can affect independence, mobility, and quality of life. The UPMC Mercy Wound Center can help those who have non-healing wounds.

What UPMC Mercy Provides

The UPMC Mercy Wound Center, part of the UPMC Department of Surgery, uses technology with an interdisciplinary approach to treating and healing wounds. Our wound care team has experienced professionals from medicine, surgery, nursing, and physical therapy, as well as food and nutrition.

The UPMC Mercy Wound Center treats wounds caused by:

  • poor circulation
  • diabetes
  • vascular disease
  • traumatic injuries
  • pressure ulcers

The UPMC Mercy Wound Center is a rehabilitation-based program. Our physician medical director, a licensed physical therapist/certified wound specialist, and a registered nurse specializing in wound management perform all evaluations. We consult with your primary care provider to learn your medical history and discuss past problems. This information is used to develop your care plan. Reassessments and specialty consultations occur as needed.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Our team of health care professionals provides a range of treatment options, including:

  • antibiotic therapy
  • debridement (the removal of nonviable tissue)
  • ultrasound, electrical stimulation, infrared, and ultraviolet technologies
  • exercise and gait evaluation
  • vascular, plastic, and podiatric surgery

Our goal is to improve circulation, revitalize tissue, increase and restore mobility, decrease swelling and pain, improve neuropathy, and offer preventive actions for the future.

The UPMC Mercy Wound Center offers technology that may help to enhance circulation to the lower extremities in some patients suffering from vascular disease who cannot be revascularized.

A registered nurse specializing in wound care assesses and monitors the patient’s care. The nurse also provides continuing education regarding medications, wound care, and lifestyle changes.

Once treatment is completed, the UPMC Mercy Wound Center works with you and your primary care physician to maintain success. If the condition changes or a problem recurs, our team is available for consultation or assistance.
