Trauma Unit Information

Trauma services at UPMC Presbyterian are provided in multiple units, each with a particular focus. Patients in these units may be discharged from the unit to home or other facilities, or may be transferred from the unit to other units at UPMC Presbyterian as their conditions and needs change.

Unit 4G: Neurotrauma Intensive Care Unit

The Neurotrauma ICU is a 10-bed surgical critical care unit serving adult and geriatric trauma patients. The primary focus is the care of the critically injured trauma patient with head trauma, but also includes those patients with chest and abdomen trauma, spinal cord injuries, and orthopaedic trauma. We focus on providing holistic care to our patients and family members with the combined efforts of our dedicated multidisciplinary team. Our unit team promotes nurse-directed open family visitation and the family’s participation in physician medical rounds.

A kitchen area is available on the unit for visitors with a refrigerator, coffee, and microwave. Please ask staff for assistance.

Unit 6F/G: Surgical Trauma Intensive Care Unit

The Surgical Trauma Intensive Care Unit is a 22-bed unit split between the F wing and G wing of the sixth floor. This intensive care unit specializes in caring for patients who are critically ill after surgery or a traumatic injury.

Please call before visiting the unit. Call 2-2227 from the waiting room or 412-692-2227 from outside the hospital. The unit has flexible blocks of time for visiting hours.

Unit 6F/G is a secured unit, and is monitored by an access system. Call the unit’s central station at 2-2227 from the waiting room upon arrival and give the name of the patient you are visiting. The doors will open automatically after the patient’s nurse has been contacted.  

Immediate family members may stay overnight in the waiting room. Showers are available inside the waiting room; towels and washcloths are provided. A kitchen area is available on the unit for visitors with a refrigerator, coffee, and microwave. Please ask staff for assistance.

Unit 5G: Neurotrauma Step-Down Unit

Unit 5G is an 18-bed neuroscience and neurotrauma step-down unit that specializes in the care of neurological, neurosurgical, and neurotrauma patients with a variety of diagnoses. The patients receive frequent neurological evaluations, as well as continuous cardiac and vital sign monitoring. Staff members collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to provide care. The nurses are educated in trauma and stroke and have advanced training in the care of neurological patients. They work closely with world-renowned surgeons.

A visitors’ bathroom is available immediately outside the unit, outside the 5F and 5G waiting room. A kitchen area is available on the unit for visitors with a refrigerator, coffee. and microwave. Please ask staff for assistance.

Unit 7F: Neurotrauma Step-Down Unit

Unit 7F is a 12-bed neuroscience and neurotrauma step-down unit that specializes in the care of neurological, neurosurgical, and neurotrauma patients with a variety of diagnoses. The patients receive frequent neurological exams, as well as continuous cardiac and vital sign monitoring. Staff members collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to provide care. The nurses are educated in trauma and stroke, and have advanced training in the care of neurologic patients. They work closely with world-renowned surgeons.

There are no public restrooms in 7F. A public restroom is available on unit 7D. A kitchen area is available on the unit for visitors with a refrigerator, coffee, and microwave. Please ask staff for assistance.

Unit 9G: Trauma Progressive Care Unit

Unit 9G is a 24-bed, monitored, trauma and vascular surgery unit that specializes in the care of who have had multiple traumas, general surgery, orthopaedic injuries, and vascular surgery. Psychological support is offered as patients recover from traumatic injuries.

9G shares a visitors’ restroom with 9F; it is located outside 9F. A kitchen area is available on the unit for visitors with a refrigerator, coffee, and microwave. Please ask staff for assistance.

Unit 10G: Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery Unit

The Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery Unit has 24 beds, most of which are semiprivate. Most patients stay in Unit 10G for about five days. Physical and occupational therapy are provided on the unit.

The family waiting room for Unit 10G is at the end of the hallway. A visitor restroom is available near the Medical Intensive Care Unit waiting room in Unit 10F. A kitchen area is available on the unit for visitors with a refrigerator, coffee, and microwave. Please ask staff for assistance.

Unit 12D Trauma Monitored Unit

Unit 12D is a 23-bed, monitored trauma unit that specializes in the care of patients who have had multiple traumas, general surgery, and orthopaedic injuries.

Restrooms for visitors are located in the short hallway as you enter the unit. A family waiting room is located directly to the right of the entrance to the unit. A kitchen area is available on the unit for visitors with a refrigerator, coffee, and microwave. Please ask staff for assistance.
