About Us

Founded in 1893, UPMC Presbyterian is an academic medical center that provides highly advanced cardiovascular care, including interventional cardiology, complex cardiac surgery, a renowned Heart Transplantation Program, and one of the country’s first Artificial Heart Programs. The hospital serves as the clinical home of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine’s Division of Cardiology, Division of Vascular Surgery, and Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery. In addition to offering the most state-of-the art facilities and technology for diagnosis and treatment of heart and vascular-related conditions, UPMC Presbyterian offers patients access to new treatments through clinical trials conducted by physician researchers who are experts in their fields.

Services provided range from non-invasive diagnostic techniques to advanced invasive procedures, surgery, and rehabilitation services.

Diagnostic services:

  • Cardiac MRI
  • Exercise stress tests with and without nuclear imaging
  • Electrocardiograms
  • Echocardiograms, both routine and stress test
  • Transesophageal echocardiograms
  • Holter and event monitors

Invasive procedures:

  • Diagnostic cardiac catheterizations
  • Angioplasty and stent procedures
  • Intra-aortic balloon pump insertion
  • Intravascular ultrasound
  • Peripheral diagnostic and interventional procedures
  • Acute myocardial infarction services with 24/7/365 emergency coverage

Electrophysiology services:

  • Diagnostic electrophysiology studies
  • Implantation of pacemakers
  • Implantation of internal defibrillators
  • Arrhythmia ablations, including atrial fibrillation ablations
  • Pacemaker and defibrillator diagnostic services
  • Tilt table testing
  • Arrhythmia conversion

Surgical services:

  • Abdominal and thoracic aneurysm repair
  • Aortic root replacement
  • Atrial ablation
  • Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG)
  • Heart and heart-lung transplantation
