Diabetes Program
The Diabetes Program at UPMC Passavant was designed as a resource for both the hospital and the community. We offer self-management resources for people who have diabetes, for their significant others, and for their physicians; diabetes education programs for the community; and diabetes education services for inpatients.
Diabetes Education Series
The Diabetes Education Series teaches individuals who have diabetes, and their significant others, how they may manage the disease using techniques recommended by the American Diabetes Association. Participants will learn more about administering insulin and medication, monitoring their own blood glucose, managing the disease with proper diet and exercise, and setting goals. Fees for the series are reimbursable by most insurance plans.The Diabetes Education Series is offered monthly. View a list of class dates and times.
The series is divided into four 2½ hour classes. Participants may complete the program in one month or over a period of several months as their schedules permit. An outline for the classes follows:
Class 1:
- diabetes overview
- behavior change strategies, goal setting, problem solving
- monitoring
- health recommendations
Class 2:
- medications
- sick days
- travel
- stress
Class 3:
Class 4:
- acute and chronic complications
- physical activity
