Lifeline

What is Lifeline?
Lifeline is a personal emergency response system provided as a community service by UPMC Passavant. The system is designed to provide subscribers with a way to call for help if they are ill or injured.

What do I receive when I subscribe to Lifeline?

  • Use of a Lifeline unit, including routine maintenance and service of that unit.
  • Medical information on file in UPMC Passavant’s NORCOM Response Center.

What does Lifeline cost?
A Lifeline unit may be leased for $30 per month for a regular voice unit, or $35 per month for a voice telephone unit. There is also a one-time installation fee of $25.

Does Lifeline prevent me from using my telephone?
No. Installation of the Lifeline unit does not prevent you from using your telephone to make or receive any calls.

Is any special equipment needed before Lifeline is installed?
A telephone and a modular-type phone connection are the only items required for Lifeline to be installed. If you do not have a modular-type telephone, it is very possible that your present telephone can be converted to a modular-type by a Lifeline installer.

Is Lifeline restricted to any particular age group?
No, all ages are welcome.

How long do I have to subscribe to the service?
You may lease the Lifeline for as long as you need it.

Does medical insurance cover the cost of Lifeline?
Many insurance companies cover Lifeline on a case-by-case basis. Please contact the Lifeline coordinator for more information. At this time, Blue Cross, Blue Shield, and Medicare do not cover the cost of Lifeline.

How long does it take to get Lifeline installed?
Once an application has been received, Lifeline can usually be installed within a day or two.

Who do I contact to get a unit or more information on Lifeline?
Contact Denny Alsing, EMT/P, Prehospital Care at 412-367-6309 or via e-mail at alsingdj@ph.upmc.edu.
