UPMC Horizon recognizes 10 nurses for “Excellence in Practice”

Farrell and Greenville, Pa. — As part of National Nurses Week, UPMC Horizon will honor 10 exceptional nurses during its 12th annual “Excellence in Practice” awards ceremony Monday, May 10, at the Radisson Hotel of Sharon, Shenango Township.

This year’s honorees include:

  • Sally Coates, RN, a staff nurse on Three West at the Greenville campus
  • Cheryl Ferguson , RN,  a staff nurse on Three West at the Greenville campus
  • Becky Fry, RN, BSN, CWOCN,  enterostomal therapist and clinical coordinator for the UPMC Horizon Center for Wound Treatment
  • Debra Godinich, LPN, licensed practical nurse who works in the Ambulatory Services Department at the Greenville campus
  • Matt Maritch, RN, BSN, a staff nurse on Three North at the Greenville campus
  • Sue Rinella, RN, who works in the Outpatient Oncology Department
  • Sherri Robinson, RN, a staff nurse on Three West at the Greenville campus
  • Jeanne Schrantz, RN, operating room nurse at the Shenango Valley campus
  • Amy Thompson, CRNP, a certified registered nurse practitioner who works with the physicians at Greenville Medical Center-UPMC
  • Sara Webster-Mull, RN, a staff nurse on Three West at the Greenville campus

In addition, Joni Brinker, RN, a nurse in the Emergency Department at the Shenango Valley campus, will be named “Rookie of the Year” and Bo Springer of the Maintenance Department will receive the first “Friend of Nursing Award.” Mr. Springer was selected by UPMC Horizon nurses as a non-nursing employee who sets a standard by working collaboratively with members of the nursing team to enhance the patient experience and positively contributes to the future of UPMC Horizon by supporting the nursing profession.

The nursing staff also will award “Heart of Horizon” scholarships to Donna Carl, RN, BSN, infection control specialist; Melody Capitola, RN, BSN, CWOCN, enterostomal therapist with the UPMC Horizon Center for Wound Treatment; and Tina Laaks, RNC, staff nurse at UPMC Horizon Birth Place.

A panel of UPMC Horizon nursing staff and managers selected the recipients based on such traits as care delivery, quality of care and quality improvement, quality of nursing leadership and interdisciplinary relationships, teaching ability, and professional development.

Nurses who receive Excellence in Practice Awards are eligible to compete for the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing Cameos of Caring award. The Cameos of Caring award recipient will be chosen to represent UPMC Horizon nurses at the Cameos of Caring awards gala this fall. Applicants from many hospitals throughout western Pennsylvania participate in Cameos of Caring each year.
