UPMC Horizon awards medical education scholarships
Farrell and Greenville, PA – The UPMC Horizon medical staff scholarship trustees have awarded $9,000 in scholarships to nine medical students from Crawford, Lawrence and Mercer Counties.
This year’s recipients are:
- Danielle L. Gainor, fourth-year medical student at Drexel University College of Medicine, Philadelphia, and daughter of Kim Gainor of Greenville. Ms. Gainor is a 2002 graduate of Greenville Area High School and a 2006 graduate of Duquesne University, where she studied biology and chemistry. She plans to serve a ear, nose, and throat rotation at UPMC this fall. Ms. Gainor was a recipient of the UPMC Horizon Medical Staff Scholarship in 2007 and 2008.
- Marie A. Hurd, third-year medical student at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, Erie, and daughter of David Violette of Copley, Ohio. Ms. Hurd graduated from Akron Firestone High School in 1993 and earned a degree in medical dietetics from Ohio State University in 1998. She has served obstetrics/gynecology and general surgery rotations at UPMC Horizon. Ms. Hurd is a wife, mother and a tri-athlete, and her interests include nutrition and fitness and travel. Ms. Hurd received a UPMC Horizon Medical Staff Scholarship in 2008.
- Brian Lamb, second-year medical student at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. Mr. Lamb is a 1993 graduate of Mohawk Jr. / Sr. High School and earned a degree in biology from the University of Pittsburgh in 1996. For nearly eight years, Mr. Lamb has worked as a physician assistant for Rehabilitation and Orthopedic Services. His interests include various medical interest groups that enhance his medical studies.
- Andrew Leuenberger, third-year medical student at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and son of James and Pamela Leuenberger of Mercer. Mr. Leuenberger graduated from West Middlesex High School in 2003 and earned a degree in molecular biology from Grove City College in 2007. His interests include a variety of medical interest groups, as well as Christian outreach and sports.
- Craig Mackaness, fourth-year medical student at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and son of Kimball and Laurie Mackaness of New Wilmington. A 2001 graduate of Wilmington Area High School, Mr. Mackaness earned a degree in molecular biology from Grove City College in 2005 and served a pediatric rotation at UPMC Horizon. Mr. Mackaness’s interests include various medical interest groups, racquetball and cycling.
- Jason P. Manross, third-year medical student at Drexel University College of Medicine and son of Paul and Connie Manross of Saegertown. Mr. Manross is a 2003 graduate of Saegertown Area High School a 2007 graduate of Cornell University, where he earned a degree in agriculture and life science. His interests include cycling, wrestling, kickboxing, weightlifting and medical interest groups. Mr. Manross received a UPMC Horizon Medical Staff Scholarship in 2008.
- Rachel D. Nighswander, fourth-year medical student at Penn State College of Medicine, Hershey, Pa., and daughter of Jerry and Angela Nighswander of Hermitage. Ms. Nighswander is a 2002 graduate of Hickory High School and earned a degree in biology from Pennsylvania State University in 2005. She completed a family practice rotation at UPMC St. Margaret this year. Her interests include public relations, volunteering for a variety of child-related non-profit organizations, and medical interest groups. Ms. Nighswander received a UPMC Horizon Medical Staff Scholarship in 2007 and 2008.
- Adam D. Rhodes, third-year medical student at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine and son of Dennis and Janice Rhodes of West Pittsburgh, Pa. Mr. Rhodes graduated from New Castle Senior High School in 2004 and earned a degree in biology from Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, in 2008. His interests include various medical interest groups that enhance his medical studies. Mr. Rhodes received a UPMC Horizon Medical Staff Scholarship in 2008.
- Megan N. Wasson, fourth-year medical student at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine and daughter of Deborah Wasson of Conneautville, Pa. Ms. Wasson graduated from Conneaut Valley High School in 2003 and earned a degree in pre-medicine from Pennsylvania State University in 2007. Her interests include community work, particularly advocacy for women and children; exercising, traveling, shopping and spending time with family and friends. Ms. Wasson received a UPMC Horizon Medical Staff Scholarship in 2008.
Trustees of the UPMC Horizon Medical Staff Scholarship Trust Fund are Jeffrey Bedlion, MD; Mathew Bee, MD; and Kirk Works, MD (chairman). The UPMC Horizon medical staff provides funding for the scholarships.
Annual UPMC Horizon Medical Staff scholarships are open to medical students from the areas served by UPMC Horizon. Specific eligibility criteria and applications can be obtained by contacting the UPMC Horizon Medical Staff Services office at 724- 589-6224.
