UPMC Horizon Bariatric Surgery Center expands with second office location
Hermitage, PA – The UPMC Horizon Bariatric Surgery Center, named a Center of Excellence by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, will offer an additional office location next month when Christopher J. Myers, MD, general, laparoscopic, and bariatric surgeon with Horizon Surgical Associates-UPMC, starts seeing patients at the Womancare Center of UPMC Horizon. Dr. Myers’ office hours at the Womancare Center will begin Monday, Nov. 2.
Dr. Myers joined UPMC Horizon in July after completing a minimally invasive surgery fellowship at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C. He earned his medical degree from University of Dublin, Trinity College, Ireland, and completed surgical residencies at Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic, and UPMC Mercy. He is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, and the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons.
The UPMC Horizon Bariatric Surgery Center uses a multi-disciplinary approach that includes not only surgery but also nutrition, exercise, and psychological components. The program follows patients through the pre-operative phase to surgery and beyond, including support groups offered at both the Greenville campus and the Womancare Center in Hermitage.
Patients who qualify for weight loss surgery are typically 100 or more pounds overweight, have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or more, and many have one or more co-existing medical conditions, such as high blood pressure, sleep apnea, or diabetes. Patients with a BMI of 35 who have one or more of the co-existing conditions listed above also may qualify.
In addition to weight loss, bariatric surgery offers resolution to many co-morbid conditions associated with obesity, including the improvement or elimination of diabetes, reduced cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure, and better overall quality of life.
Dr. Myers will continue to see patients at Horizon Surgical Associates-UPMC, 428 S. Main St, Greenville, where he practices in association with bariatric surgeons James Kolenich, MD, and Etwar McBean, MD.
