UPMC St. Margaret to Host “Heart of a Champion” Fund-Raising Event for the American Heart Association

PITTSBURGH, PA — Every 34 seconds someone has a heart attack in the United States and each minute someone dies from a heart-related illness.  Be a part of the fight against heart disease by attending the “Heart of a Champion” fund-raising event hosted by UPMC St. Margaret and the American Heart Association on Thursday, Aug. 12 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at UPMC St. Margaret hospital, 815 Freeport Road.

Event attendees will have the unique opportunity to try on and take pictures with a 2009 Super Bowl champion ring and a 2009 Stanley Cup champion ring in return for a monetary donation to the American Heart Association.  One hundred percent of the proceeds will go toward the American Heart Association’s 2010 Pittsburgh Start! Heart Walk, on Sunday, Oct. 10.

UPMC St. Margaret orthopaedic surgeons Charles J. Burke III, M.D., and James P. Bradley, M.D., who are team physicians for the Pittsburgh Penguins and Pittsburgh Steelers respectively, are donating their rings for use at the event.

All photographs must be taken with attendees’ personal cameras, as cameras and photographers will not be provided. Parking for the event is located in visitor lots C, D, or E.  If a donation is made to the Pittsburgh Start! Heart Walk, parking will be validated.  Attendees should enter the hospital through Hospital entrance C.

In Pittsburgh, the American Heart Association is currently funding over $5.7 million for 42 different ongoing heart and stroke projects at the University of Pittsburgh. Over the past 10 years, the American Heart Association has granted more than $24 million in research funding to the University of Pittsburgh and Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. For every $1 raised in our area, more than $4 is reinvested back into the Pittsburgh area in the form of research.
