Other Eating Disorders

There are many eating disorders that do not meet the criteria of the more common conditions, such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or binge eating disorder.

Signs and Symptoms

Individuals with other eating disorders may:

  • have all symptoms of anorexia nervosa except skipped menstrual periods (amenorrhea)
  • have symptoms of anorexia nervosa and significant weight loss, but current weight is in the normal range
  • engage in binge eating and unhealthy behaviors, such as self-induced vomiting or misuse of laxatives, diet pills, or diuretics (water pills), less often than twice per week for at least three months
  • engage in unhealthy behaviors, such as self-induced vomiting or misuse of laxatives, diet pills, or diuretics (water pills), without binge eating or when eating only small amounts of food
