Pharmacy Residency Program

UPMC Content 3

UPMC Mercy is a tertiary care teaching hospital and Level I Regional Resource Trauma Center.  The hospital provides comprehensive medical and surgical services, including innovative programs in neurosciences and cardiovascular diseases. UPMC Mercy has accredited residency programs in internal medicine, surgery, and physical medicine and rehabilitation in addition to the PGY 1 pharmacy residency.

The PGY 1 pharmacy residency is an ASHP-accredited full-time, one-year program. It provides extensive experience and opportunities in all aspects of health-system pharmacy with major emphasis on clinical pharmacy practice and the application of informatics. Residents gain experience providing a wide range of pharmacotherapy and educational services to health care providers within the hospital. The resident also has the opportunity to participate in academic level instruction through the Duquesne University School of Pharmacy.

The core rotations offered in the residency reflect the strengths of the institution and the pharmacy department, and include:

  • Cardiology
  • Critical care
  • Infectious diseases
  • Internal medicine/medication safety
  • Nutritional support

Practice management, drug information, and participation in the pharmacy warfarin management team are conducted in a longitudinal manner. Elective rotations include academics, endocrinology, hematology/oncology, neonatology and nephrology.

Our PGY 1 program is designed to equip residents with the knowledge, skills and confidence to be excellent practitioners in hospital and academic settings. Upon completion, our residents are prepared to aggressively compete for clinical practice as well as entry level faculty positions.
