Jonas Johnson

Jonas Johnson, M.D., is professor and chair of the department of otolaryngology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

He is an expert in innovative surgical strategies for the treatment of head and neck cancer, imaging of head and neck tumors, the apoptosis of immune cells in head and neck cancer, the role of radiation in head and neck cancer, and the diagnosis and treatment of infectious and allergic disorders.

He has authored more than 325 peer-reviewed manuscripts, 17 books and more than 130 book chapters on issues related to his field. He has published on each of the organs relevant to his field, including the larynx, tongue, sinuses, thyroid, blood vessels and salivary glands.

Dr. Johnson received his medical degree from the State University of New York Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse. His first academic appointment was with the department of otolaryngology at Pitt in 1979 as an assistant professor. He rose to associate professor in 1984 and professor in 1987 and has been vice chairman of the department since 1982. Since 1985 he has directed the fellowship of head and neck oncology and immunology and since 1986 has been the director of the division of head and neck oncology and immunology, both in the department of otolaryngology.

He is a past president of the American Head and Neck Society and the American Academy of Otolaryngology where he remains on the board. He also has been a member of the Board of Governors of the American College of Surgeons and the president of the Southwestern Pennsylvania chapter of that group.

A professor who has been director or co-director of more than 80 courses for students, residents, fellows and senior physicians, Dr. Johnson has been honored many times with outstanding professor awards. He has presented more than 500 lectures and seminars in national and international venues.
