Daniel J. Buysse, M.D. is an associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and the medical director of the sleep evaluation center at the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic. At the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, he serves as associate director of the general clinical research center, director of the clinical neuroscience research center and co-director of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, an accredited sleep medicine fellowship.
After attending the University of Michigan where he earned a bachelor’s degree in English and Biomedical Science and a doctorate of medicine, Dr. Buysse completed an internship, a residency and four fellowships at the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic. In 1988, he joined the University of Pittsburgh Schoolof Medicine as an assistant professor of psychiatry.
Dr. Buysse has conducted numerous research-related activities and is currently interested in researching the evaluation and pharmacotherapy of insomnia disorders, sleep disorders nosology, and sleep and circadian rhythms in both aging and depression.
Among other honors, Dr. Buysse was listed in the 1996 and the 2002 editions of Pittsburgh Magazine’s “Top Docs” List.
Dr. Buysse belongs to various professional and scientific societies, which include the Pennsylvania Psychiatric Association, the American Psychiatric Association, the Society for Research on Biological Rhythms, the Sleep Research Society, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the American Medical Association. He also has contributed to more than 200 refereed articles, reviews, invited published papers, books, book chapters and published abstracts.
