Anthony Fabio

Anthony Fabio, R.D., M.P.H., Ph.D., is assistant professor of neurological surgery in the department of neurology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and member of the university’s Center for Injury Research and Control .

Dr. Fabio received his undergraduate degree in nutrition from the University of Pittsburgh in 1984. In 1994, Dr. Fabio returned to the University of Pittsburgh to receive a master’s degree in public health, followed by a Ph.D., in epidemiology at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health.

After completing his Ph.D., Dr. Fabio took a position at the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, where he worked as an epidemiologist for the Fire Fighter Fatality and Investigation Program and was principal investigator of a study that was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of crane operator certification in reducing the risk of crane-related injuries.

Currently, Dr. Fabio is a co-investigator of a study examining the correlates of suicide in borderline personality disorder patients, as well as several studies looking at different aspects of traumatic brain injury. Dr. Fabio’s main area of interest is in the social contributions of the causes of violence. Dr. Fabio also is a co-investigator of a project in which he is assessing the relative contributions of period and cohort effects on violence trends.

Dr. Fabio has five years of practical experience in injury prevention and control, particularly in the development of large databases and the management and analysis of data. Dr. Fabio also has developed and supervised research projects designed to examine risk factors for injuries.

Among Dr. Fabio’s peer-reviewed publications include the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Health, New Microbiology, the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine and Journal of the American Medical Association.
