UPMC Named to U.S. News & World Report Honor Roll of America’s Best Hospitals for the Ninth Time
With Top Rankings in 15 Specialties, UPMC Only Local Hospital Honored
PITTSBURGH , July 11, 2008 — The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) has once again received national recognition as one of “America’s Best Hospitals,” earning 14th position in U.S. News & World Report’s annual guide. The 2008 results mark UPMC’s ninth appearance in the last 10 years on the prestigious Honor Roll, which this year includes only 19 hospitals nationwide that are considered the “best of the best,” according to the publication.
In addition, UPMC is nationally ranked in 15 of the 16 medical specialties surveyed—one more than last year—and is the only local hospital to receive recognition in any category on this influential list.
Of the 5,453 medical centers in the nation that were analyzed, only 170 were ranked in one or more specialties. To be in the elite Honor Roll group, hospitals had to achieve high scores in six or more specialties, demonstrating “breadth of excellence,” according to the guide.
“UPMC has again appeared on the U.S. News Honor Roll as a national leader in patient care and quality,” said Elizabeth Concordia, executive vice president of UPMC and president of the Hospital and Community Services Division. “Our dedicated physicians and employees continue to lead us in creating the hospital of the future, where patients receive the right care at the right time, every time.”
The specialty rankings for UPMC this year are: third in ear, nose and throat; seventh in gynecology (Magee-Womens Hospital); eighth in geriatrics; ninth in orthopaedics and psychiatry; 10th in rheumatology; 13th in respiratory disorders and kidney disease; 14th in neurology and neurosurgery and rehabilitation; 18th in gastrointestinal disorders; 24th in cancer; 30th in endocrinology; 31st in urology; and 36th in heart and heart surgery.
The 2008 America’s Best Hospitals guide, published by the U.S. News Media Group, will be on sale at newsstands on Monday, July 14. Full data is available online at www.usnews.com/besthospitals. The rankings are based on elements that include reputation, death rate and care-related factors, such as nurse staffing and technology.
