2009 Parran Lecture – Tobacco Control Now and In the Future

WHAT: “Tobacco Control:  Looking Back, Looking Forward” – 2009 Thomas Parran Lecture presented by the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health

WHO: Kenneth Warner, Ph.D., dean, University of Michigan School of Public Health and founding director, University of Michigan Tobacco Research Network

WHEN: 3 p.m., Monday, Nov. 16

WHERE: Ballroom A, University Club, 123 University Place, Oakland

WHY: Tobacco control may be one of the most important public health success stories of the past half century in the United States and other developed nations. Smoking rates in the U.S. have dropped by more than half, and 151 countries have ratified the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control – an unprecedented treaty aimed at curbing tobacco use. Dr. Warner, an expert in tobacco control policies and economics, will describe the dimensions of these successes and the future of global tobacco control efforts.

The Parran Lecture is named in honor of Thomas Parran, M.D., who was Surgeon General of the United States under Presidents Roosevelt and Truman before he became the first dean of Pitt’s Graduate School of Public Health. He drafted the constitution for what would become the World Health Organization in 1946; helped shaped the modern Public Health Service; and expanded the activities of the National Institutes of Health. The lecture series was established in 1963 to honor Dr. Parran’s many accomplishments.

The lecture is free and open to the public. For more information, call (412) 383-8849.

For those who cannot attend, a live webcast will be available at www.publichealth.pitt.edu/parranlecture2009.
