Calendar Editors:  UPMC and Pitt’s Graduate School of Public Health Launch Oakland-Based Diabetes Support Group

WHAT: Oakland Diabetes Support Group – a new support group in Oakland led by the UPMC Diabetes Centers for people with pre-diabetes or Type 2 diabetes

WHEN: Meetings will take place at noon on Tuesdays, March 3, June 2 and Sept. 1

WHERE: Classroom B, UPMC Montefiore, Oakland

WHY: Type 2 diabetes, also known as adult-onset or noninsulin-dependent diabetes, is a chronic condition that affects the way the body metabolizes sugar. Type 2 diabetes is often preventable, but the condition is on the rise – fueled largely by the current obesity epidemic.

Joan Anson, M.S., University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health staff member, proposed the idea for the support group to address the needs of type 2 diabetics, who use diet, exercise and medication to manage blood sugar levels in the body.

Meetings are free and open to the public. For more information on the support group, contact Sharlene Emerson of the UPMC Diabetes Center at 412-692-4293 or emersons@upmc.edu, or Joan Anson at 412-624-3806 or anson@pitt.edu
