
Media Advisory/Photo Opportunity: UPMC Eye Center to Sponsor 2009 Pittsburgh VisionWalk
WHO: More than 150 local participants; VisionWalk medical chairs Joel S. Schuman, M.D., director of the UPMC Eye Center, Maj. Gen. (ret.) Gale S. Pollock, executive director of the Fox Center for Vision Restoration of UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh, and Pamela P. Rath, M.D., from Retina Vitreous Consultants in Oakland; and VisionWalk co-chairs Cindy and Mark Taliani
WHAT: Sponsored locally by the UPMC Eye Center, VisionWalk takes place nationwide in 46 cities throughout the year to raise money for the Foundation Fighting Blindness. Pittsburgh VisionWalk participants have pledged to raise $50,000.
WHEN: Saturday, Oct. 10, 2009. Registration begins at 9 a.m., followed by the walk at 10 a.m.
WHERE: South Side Works Town Square, South 27th and Sidney Streets, South Side
WHY: More than 20 million Americans are visually impaired. The Foundation Fighting Blindness funds sight-saving research in genetics, gene therapy, transplantation, artificial retinal implants, and pharmaceutical and nutritional therapies.
