Is Health Care Reform Possible?

Pitt’s Graduate School of Public Health Welcomes Panelists to Health Care Reform Forum

WHO: Congressman Tim Murphy (R-PA); Congressman Jason Altmire (D-PA); former U.S. Treasury Secretary Paul O’Neill; and moderator, Beaufort Longest, Ph.D., professor of health policy and management, University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health

WHAT: Health Care Reform Forum sponsored by the University of Pittsburgh’s Graduate & Professional Student Assembly and the Pittsburgh Urban Magnet Project (PUMP)

WHEN: 6 to 7:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 23

WHERE: Graduate School of Public Health Auditorium, Room G23, 130 DeSoto St., Oakland

WHY: Nearly 46 million Americans have no insurance and 25 million more are underinsured, prompting the federal government to look at ways to reform America’s health care system. Democratic leaders in the U.S. Senate and House are currently negotiating ways to merge five health care bills into a single measure that they say will rein in costs, regulate insurers and expand coverage. Republican leaders have spoken out against a public option, and argue the proposed legislation fails to ensure greater affordability for American families and small businesses, and may lead to higher costs.

Panelists will share their views and address whether a compromise can be reached in the foreseeable future that will reform health care in America.

The forum is open only to Pitt faculty, students, staff, alumni and media.
