Depressed Adults with Insomnia Needed for Pitt Study

PITTSBURGH, Oct. 14, 2009 – Adults ages 18 to 75 who have been diagnosed with major depressive disorder (MDD) and insomnia are needed to participate in a research study at the Mood Disorders Treatment Research Program of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

MDD is a serious, yet treatable illness that includes symptoms such as feeling sad and tired; loss of appetite, self-esteem or interest in activities that used to be enjoyable; having problems concentrating, remembering or sleeping; or having thoughts about death. Insomnia is a common sleep disorder characterized by difficulty falling and staying asleep, and daytime problems such as irritability, fatigue and poor attention.

Study participants will meet with the investigator or staff 10 times over the course of 16 weeks. During this time, participants will receive FDA-approved antidepressant medications and one of two insomnia therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy or psychotherapy. If the specific therapy for insomnia is not helpful, or side effects are experienced, another medication will be prescribed by the study physician.
