University of Pittsburgh High School Summer Academy Open House

WHAT: An informational session for high school students and their parents and teachers reviewing research and experiential learning opportunities at the University of Pittsburgh

WHEN: 5 to 7 p.m., Wed., Jan. 18

WHERE: William Pitt Union, Kurtzman Room, 3959 Fifth Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15260

WHY: Now in its fourth summer, UPCI’s High School Summer Academy offers students the opportunity to work one-on-one with a senior cancer researcher in a laboratory setting.  Rising high school seniors accepted into the program will develop a research project that will be presented at the program’s conclusion. They also will participate in shadowing opportunities, field trips to local scientific activities and presentations by guest speakers. The three sites participating in the UPCI Summer Academy are the Hillman Cancer Center in Shadyside, the Department of Biomedical Informatics and Computational and Systems Biology in Oakland and the Magee-Womens Research Institute in Oakland. Other summer programs, including those at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC and the Pittsburgh Tissue Engineering Initiative, also will be presented, and representatives will be available.
