UPMC has committed itself to building a new export industry for Pittsburgh — one based on medicine and research instead of the steel that once powered the city’s economy.

Starting in 1997, UPMC worked with the Region of Sicily and the Italian government to create what is now a leading transplant center, known as ISMETT, in Palermo. More than 800 transplants have been performed since the creation of this partnership, and its success has spawned the development of a major biomedical research center to be managed by UPMC. At the same time, UPMC has been sought out by partners in Ireland, the United Kingdom, Qatar, and Cyprus for its hospital and cancer center management skills, emergency medicine know-how, and expertise in implementing electronic medical records. UPMC is rapidly becoming an international health care brand that attracts the best and brightest physicians and staff from around the world for the benefit of its patients.

A New Model for Cancer Care

learn more

In 2010, cancer will surpass heart disease as the world’s No. 1 killer, which demands not only the continuation of cutting-edge research but also dramatic improvements in the way cancer care is provided.

UPMC is meeting that need with an innovative model for cancer care, one that is now being exported around the world. Together, UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute have partnered with local community hospitals and office-based oncology practices to create more than 40 UPMC Cancer Centers across western Pennsylvania, resulting in the largest integrated community network of cancer specialists in the country. Based on a so-called “hub-and-spoke” model, the network’s flagship facility is the Hillman Cancer Center in Pittsburgh, which opened in 2002. Patients treated at any of the UPMC Cancer Centers receive the highest quality care without having to leave their communities, while still having access to the expertise, clinical trials, and highly specialized treatments available at the Hillman.

Treatment at the centers is based on the most promising research advances and diagnostic technology. Using sophisticated technological links to Pittsburgh, UPMC’s success in Pennsylvania has been replicated overseas, with two UPMC-operated cancer centers in Ireland. At the same time, UPMC is partnering with GE Healthcare to create advanced and accessible cancer centers throughout Europe and the Middle East to fight this deadly global disease.

The current H1N1 outbreak is a timely example of the need for a global response to address health issues that impact the world.

Recognizing that most global health problems result from a combination of social, economic, political, and environmental inequalities, the Center for Global Health at the University of Pittsburgh works to address these needs by promoting multidisciplinary international health research and scholarship. The center, led by Donald S. Burke, MD, associate vice chancellor for global health and dean, University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health, is based on partnership with schools and centers across the university to address the most pressing health issues of the day.
