UPMC Ranks Highest in Region

July 2, 2004 -- UPMC once again has placed at the top of the western Pennsylvania region in U.S. News & World Report magazine's America's Best Hospitals 2004 rankings of hospitals in the United States.

This year, UPMC is recognized as a top hospital nationally in 12 specialty areas, more than any other hospital in western Pennsylvania. In 9 specialties, UPMC programs finished in the top 20 in the nation; in two specialties, the top 10. UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside ranked in 10 specialties; UPMC's Magee-Womens Hospital ranked in gynecology; and UPMC's Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh ranked in pediatrics.

“These rankings are a recognition of the quality of care provided by our physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals who are among the finest in the world,” stated Elizabeth Concordia, senior vice president, Academic and Community Hospitals, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

U.S. News & World Report's America's Best Hospitals is an assessment of the nation's hospitals based on an index that takes into consideration each program's reputation among medical specialists nationwide, mortality, and various factors such as procedure volume and nursing care.

These rankings will all appear in the July 12 issue of U.S. News & World Report, which hits newsstands Monday, July 5.
