Calf Strain

Calf strain is a tear in the muscle fibers of the muscle in the back of the lower leg due to a forceful contraction or overstretching of the calf muscle. It can result from physical activity without proper stretches and warmups beforehand.

Symptoms include a sharp pain in the back of the leg, a popping or snapping sound, tenderness to the touch, swelling, and discoloration.

Treatment includes rest, ice, compression, elevation, and anti-inflammatory medication, if necessary.

Prevention

  • Stretch properly before and after activities.
  • Do not participate in activities above your skill level.
  • Progress your workouts and training gradually.

Rehabilitation

  • may begin once swelling is gone
  • gentle stretching exercises
  • initially, light strengthening exercises focusing on sets and reps, not heavy weight
  • progress into more functional and sport-specific activities
