Senior Living Options at UPMC

There are many types of living options available to seniors depending on the level of care needed.

Senior living options generally fall into 4 categories.

Independent Living

Many seniors who are active and independent, but no longer want or need the burden of owning a home, may choose to move into an independent living facility. Independent living facilities provide many of the same comforts of home, but without the worry and maintenance.

Personal care facilities offer seniors extra help with daily routines and activities such as:

  • Nutritional support
  • Assistance with daily personal care

Assisted Living

Assisted living facilities can provide more nursing care than either independent living or personal care options.

Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation

Skilled nursing and rehabilitation facilities are available for seniors and others who need 24-hour nursing care after discharge from a hospital or transfer from another type of facility or home. The care needed may be either short-term or long-term, based on a person's illness, condition, or injury. The physical, psychological, and social needs of seniors are addressed by a staff that includes geriatricians, certified registered nurse practitioners, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, certified nursing assistants, and social workers.
