Cardiac Services

Adult Cardiac Surgery

UPMC’s Division of Adult Cardiac Surgery of the Heart, Lung and Esophageal Surgery Institute offers access to a full range of cardiac surgical services including coronary artery bypass graft surgery, valve replacement and repair, and aneurysm and aortic dissection repair as well as innovative minimally invasive approaches.

UPMC surgeons helped pioneer the application of minimally invasive techniques to heart surgery, performing the first minimally invasive coronary bypass (MIDCAB) graft in the tristate region. In minimally invasive surgery, several small incisions are made, through which the surgeon inserts surgical tools and a scope with a tiny camera that allows him or her to see inside the body. Minimally invasive surgery offers patients the potential for less post-operative pain, fewer complications, and a much quicker recovery compared with traditional, open surgery.

UPMC experts tailor the surgical approach to the individual patient for optimal results. By carefully applying techniques such as minimally invasive direct coronary bypass surgery (MIDCAB) and off-pump coronary artery artery bypass surgery (OPCAB), UPMC specialists can successfully operate on many patients who would be too ill to undergo surgery elsewhere.

In addition to offering the latest advances in cardiac surgery and treatment, UPMC's surgical program provides patients with a comprehensive patient-centered approach by offering all patients access to an onsite multidisciplinary team of cardiologists; interventional radiologists; cardiac, vascular, and transplant surgeons; cardiac rehabilitation specialists; cardiac nursing specialists; physical therapists, and nutritionists. UPMC's team of health care professionals focus on providing each patient with the most advanced care and support to facilitate healing and health maintenance.
