Stroke Telemedicine

More than 700,000 people in the United States experience a stroke each year, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the country and the leading cause of adult disability. For a patient who has had a stroke, every minute counts.

The UPMC Stroke Institute, located at UPMC Presbyterian, UPMC Mercy, and UPMC Shadyside, has implemented a stroke telemedicine program, which uses state-of-the-art videoconferencing technology to link stroke experts to emergency department physicians throughout our network of hospitals. Stroke telemedicine allows more patients to be treated faster and closer to home.

The UPMC Stroke Institute is the only Joint Commission certified stroke center in Western Pennsylvania.
