About Us
The Endocrine section of the Division of Surgical Oncology is at the forefront of new, less invasive techniques in endocrine surgery. We recently presented data on our less invasive thyroid surgery at the American Thyroid Association, focusing on smaller incisions and shorter hospital stays for thyroidectomy patients. We helped to pioneer the use of intraoperative quick PTH monitoring to allow for less invasive parathyroid surgery, and continue to develop the best techniques for simple and effective care of patients who need parathyroid surgery. The Endocrine section regularly performs laparoscopic adrenalectomies and has one of the busiest practices in this field in the tristate region. Dr. Sally Carty, MD, John Yim, MD, and Jennifer Ogilvie, MD, have extensive training and experience in the care of patients afflicted with the multiple endocrine neoplasias (MEN Syndromes), unusual genetic diseases that affect organs that include the thyroid, parathyroid, pancreas, and adrenal glands. Dr. Carty is the director of the multidisciplinary University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute Endocrine Genetics Clinic, established in 1993 to educate MEN patients and families about their disorders and to provide management recommendations to their primary physicians.
