Patients that come to the IRR

Patients come to the UPMC Institute for Rehabilitation and Research with a variety of needs and diagnoses. Thirty-one percent of patients come to us for orthopaedic reasons, such as joint replacement or other orthopaedic surgeries. About FIM scores

At the IRR, we rate our patients’ abilities using a scale called the Functional Independence Measure (FIM). Patients receive a FIM score when they come to the IRR, frequently during their stay, and upon their discharge. These scores are compared to national averages to ensure that our patients are getting the best care and most effective treatment possible.
